Blood Flow Restriction

Blood flow restriction (BFR) training uses a calibrated pneumatic cuff to partially restrict venous blood flow during low-load exercise, triggering muscle strength and hypertrophy gains comparable to heavy lifting — without the joint stress.

Blood flow restriction (BFR) therapy with pneumatic cuff during guided exercise at RISE Physio
Methodology

How We Use Blood Flow Restriction (BFR)
for Your Lasting Recovery

Blood flow restriction (BFR) training is an evidence-based rehabilitation technique that applies a precisely calibrated pneumatic cuff around the upper arm or thigh to partially restrict venous blood return while you perform low-intensity resistance exercise. By keeping metabolic stress high at a fraction of the normal load — typically 20–30% of a one-rep max — BFR stimulates the same muscle-building and strength adaptations as heavy lifting, but with minimal mechanical joint stress. This makes it an ideal tool for post-operative rehabilitation, tendon recovery, and athletes returning to training who cannot yet tolerate high loads. Delivered 1-on-1 by our trained physiotherapists at our Shelburne main clinic and Orangeville satellite location inside Total Athletics, every BFR session is individually dosed using personalized limb occlusion pressure (LOP) measurements to ensure safety, comfort, and maximum therapeutic benefit.
